The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM)
The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is a global platform that empowers students to design and build innovative solutions using synthetic biology. Since 2021, Dr. Wu has been leading the iGEM team, guiding students through interdisciplinary research, project development, and real-world problem solving. Under Dr. Wu’s leadership, the team has demonstrated excellence in both scientific innovation and collaboration, earning a medal prize in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
2024 iGEM Competition
Team name: NNHS
The NNHS iGEM 2024 team developed an advanced synthetic biology system to enhance directed evolution and metabolic engineering efficiency. Their project introduced a light-inducible base editing “black box” platform that enables high-throughput random mutagenesis and screening, significantly improving mutation efficiency compared to previous systems. By applying this system to optimize metabolic pathways in E. coli, the team successfully increased the production of key compounds such as spermidine and NADPH, demonstrating real-world potential in anti-aging and biotechnology applications. In recognition of their innovative design, strong experimental validation, and impactful contribution to synthetic biology, the team was awarded a Gold Medal (金奖) and achieved Global No.1 in the Parts category (Parts 单向全球第一) at the iGEM 2024 Giant Jamboree.

2023 iGEM Competition
Team name: BS_United China
The BS United China iGEM 2023 team focused on developing a rapid and highly specific detection system for Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a key factor in acne formation. Led by Dr. Wu, the team designed an innovative L-RCA (ligation–rolling circle amplification) system using engineered padlock probes to accurately detect bacterial 16S rRNA with improved speed and specificity compared to traditional PCR methods. Their system demonstrated reliable detection and quantification of P. acnes in real human skin samples, offering a promising tool for early diagnosis and personalized skincare solutions. In recognition of their strong scientific design and experimental validation, the team was awarded a Silver Medal at the iGEM 2023 Giant Jamboree.

2022 iGEM Competition
Team name: BS_United China
The BS United China iGEM 2022 team focused on improving food safety by targeting Staphylococcus aureus, a major cause of foodborne illness. Led by Dr. Wu, the team developed a synthetic biology approach using TurboID-based protein labeling to interfere with the bacterium’s quorum sensing system, thereby reducing toxin production and inhibiting bacterial growth. Supported by engineered E. coli to supply necessary biotin, their system demonstrated effective suppression of S. aureus in both laboratory experiments and real-world food scenarios. In recognition of their innovative research and strong implementation, the team was awarded a Gold Medal (金奖) and ranked among the Global Top 10 teams at the iGEM 2022 Giant Jamboree.

2021 iGEM Competition
Team name: BS_United China
The BS United China iGEM 2021 team developed a synthetic biology project focused on improving food safety by targeting Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a harmful bacterium associated with food contamination. Led by Dr. Wu, the team engineered a system utilizing PVDQ protein to disrupt bacterial quorum sensing and inhibit bacterial growth. Through experiments such as protein purification, growth analysis, and food simulation tests, they demonstrated effective suppression of bacterial proliferation. In recognition of their innovative research and strong project execution, the team was awarded a Gold Medal (金奖) at the iGEM 2021 Giant Jamboree.
